How to Calculate Trading Profit and Loss

Calculating profit and loss (P&L) varies depending on the asset class you're trading. For stocks, it's straightforward: (Exit Price - Entry Price) x Number of Shares. For futures and forex, you need to account for contract specifications and lot sizes.

Futures P&L Calculation

Each futures contract has a specific point value. For example, the E-mini S&P 500 (ES) has a $50 point value, meaning each 1-point move equals $50 per contract. The E-mini Nasdaq (NQ) has a $20 point value.

Forex P&L Calculation

Forex profit is calculated in pips. For a standard lot (100,000 units), each pip is worth approximately $10 for USD-quoted pairs. Mini lots are worth $1 per pip, and micro lots are worth $0.10 per pip.

Long vs Short Positions

  • Long Position: You profit when the price goes up. Buy low, sell high.
  • Short Position: You profit when the price goes down. Sell high, buy back lower.
